Wonderful embroidery site!

I wanted to share with you my latest project and where the inspiration came from. I actually have finished this butterfly since taking these pictures, by filling in the spaces on the lower wings inside the purple satin stitch.

I did a lot of cross-stitch years ago, but haven't done much other hand embroidery. Then I came across this site www.needlenthread.com/videos and have learned how to do many different stitches. Mary Corbet has very clear instructional videos for learning the stitches--great for beginners. And be sure to read through her posts to see examples of her own work, which is fabulous.
For the butterfly above, the dark gray outline is whipped backstitch. The blue lines are stem stitch, and the yellow knots are French knots. The purple curved lines are satin stitch, and the sea green filler is chain stitch. I just used DMC cotton floss, since I already have many colors on hand. You may also download this pattern from the free patterns she offers.
If you want some other lovely, free patterns, check out my friend Linda Stubbs' blog at www.prairieflowerfarm.blogspot.com She is a fabric artist, and you can sign up for her free patterns along the right side of her blog. You can also access her store from her site where she sells some of her work.

  6. Camille and Sharon,

Thank you for your very kind compliments. Camille, I hope if you decide to learn alongside your daughter you find the videos at Mary's site helpful, since they were written for her children's classes.

Sharon, I see you like to work on things in the evenings as well! Maybe that's when you completed your tea cup cards, which seemed to me to have a nice blanket stitch around the edge? I hope you do share more, as one poster aksed, about how you do them. Hope you enjoy browsing Mary's site as well.

May you enjoy the fruit of your hands,
    Teresa

  8. Camille,

Thanks for dropping in! Wish you were stopping by my house for a cup of tea. I've been to your blog also and enjoyed reading about the chicken broth. That's something I'll have to consider doing. Don't get around to it that often, and not in the same way when I do. Seems really good for you, though. You're a smart lady and a good wife and mom to do that for your family:)

Know that you are loved by God today.

  9. You are sweet Teresa...tea would be lovely! Thank you for your encouraging words! How precious that the LORD doesn't leave us to ourselves, isn't it? Any wisdom I have comes from HIM...HE gets all the praise!

Oh...do try the chicken broth! It is SOOO easy, just takes time and a bit of planning, but it is sooooo good for you and yummy too! :)

    Blessings to you!
    In Him,
    Camille

  10. Beautiful butterfly Teresa! You make me want to embroider! Your stitching looks lovely. I'll have to check out Mary's videos. You should look up emroidered colonial pockets. Laura has pictures of them in her costuming books. The ladies used to make them look rather lovely, despite the fact that they were hidden underneath their skirts. I love that! A treat for yourself, everytime you get dressed.
I've been trying to learn how to knit socks, but my attempts haven't gotten off the ground yet. My soap that I told you of came out well, and I hope to make another batch very soon. Thanks too for the Titanic post and links. I looked up Father Brown's photos.

  11. Hi Teresa,
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and for your kind words. I hope you will come by again.
I love your post on embroidery. I have been wanting to learn how to embroider but don't really know all the stitches and all the other ins and outs of the craft. I'm going to visit the website you listed and see if that will help. Do you have a recommendation for any embroidery books that have all the stitches and how to do them?

I love your blog and will be back to visit again...

  12. Okay, so I just went to the website and like you said she has a lot of the stitches on video. This is better than a book!

    Thanks,

    Christa

  13. Christa,

Thanks for stopping by! Isn't that site so helpful for embroidery beginners? She did those videos for classes she teaches and they are so helpful. I don't have a book, by the way. I'd like to get one of the newer books with more patterns and ideas of projects.

Lord fill you with His grace today!

    Warmly,
    Teresa
